Position Title- Director of Exhibitions and Galleries
Reports to- Dean of Academic Affairs
Status- Full-time, Exempt. 37.5 hours per week.
Montserrat College of Art is seeking a creative, innovative, inspiring, and forward-thinking leader to serve as our Director of Exhibitions and Galleries. The galleries and related programming play a crucial role in the internal and external life of the college. The director will help articulate a vital and inclusive vision for the gallery that will bring new creative voices to the campus while continuing to explore the integration of digital media to promote engagement with our broader communities.
Summary Statement – The Director of Exhibitions and Galleries is responsible for providing the direction and curatorial vision for all the Montserrat galleries & exhibitions and related educational programming, including visiting artists, designers, and Gallery events. The Director oversees various exhibition spaces and plays an important role in planning and executing several all- college events, including Commencement and Artragious. In addition, this position works closely with college faculty and serves as an active external relations partner for Montserrat.
Major Functional Areas and Description of Duties:
- Manage Gallery department, including staff members, curatorial interns and student employees.
- Ensure the focus of exhibitions and events reflect the current discourse of the contemporary artistic and design practices.
- Provide creative direction for the organization and facilitation of numerous exhibitions annually, including approximately 20 student exhibitions.
- Curate/delegate four to six exhibitions for the Schlosberg Gallery, two exhibitions in the Founders Gallery, and at least one major exhibition annually in the Montserrat Gallery.
- Develop and coordinate a new visiting curator program for an annual show in the Montserrat Gallery.
- Help to organize high-profile public programming intended to raise the visibility of the college and enhance reputation such as academic symposia, help to identify and secure high-profile speakers and visitors such as the annual commencement speaker.
- Working with Development, write grants to support exhibitions and special curatorial projects, as appropriate.
- Work with the faculty and the Library/Gallery Committee to ensure integration of the gallery’s educational and exhibition programming into the curriculum through classroom and gallery teaching, professional practice initiatives, special events and workshops.
- Research, design, and implement assessment and data collection tools for thorough analysis of the function of current programming activities
- Oversee safe handling of all artwork and especially the transportation of artwork to and from the galleries across New York and New England.

Qualifications: (Experience, Skills, & Abilities)
Education
- MFA or MA/Ph.D. in Art, Art History, Arts Administration, Museum Studies or related fields.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years curatorial experience working with contemporary artists, designers, animators.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in a gallery or museum.
- Demonstrated success building partnerships with individuals and communities, as well as
- working collaboratively with diverse populations.
- (Preferred) Experience teaching in a higher education institution or a museum/gallery.
Office and Administrative Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and experience in multiple social media platforms
Complexity and Organization
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to accomplish multiple tasks and work under pressure.

Special Notations:
- Must be able to work occasional hours on weekends and evenings.
