The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity seeks a Director, Visual Arts to develop and implement innovative residency programs for Canadian and international artists. The role combines strategic planning, programming, relationship building, and operational management to deliver transformative artistic experiences. This position emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, diversity, and inclusion while leveraging the Centre’s values and resources.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning:
- Align visual arts programming with Banff Centre’s strategic goals.
- Develop a 3-year program plan with annual evaluations and enrollment targets.
- Collaborate with other Arts Directors to create cross-disciplinary programs.
Programming:
- Design and deliver residency programs for contemporary visual arts, including ceramics, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and digital arts.
- Plan exhibitions, open-studio events, and program dissemination.
- Ensure programs are inclusive, representing diverse cultural and artistic perspectives.
Operational Management:
- Manage program budgets and administration effectively.
- Support donor proposals and identify funding opportunities.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
Relationship Building:
- Build and maintain a network of visual arts professionals nationally and internationally.
- Collaborate with the Walter Phillips Gallery Curator for cohesive programming.
- Foster relationships with donors, sponsors, and government partners.
Leadership and Team Management:
- Provide visionary leadership to a team delivering high-quality visual arts programming.
- Promote a culture of creativity, innovation, and excellence.
- Address participant and faculty concerns with appropriate internal teams.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
- 10+ years of leadership experience in visual arts or arts programming.
- Strong network and reputation within Canadian and international art communities.
- Proven ability to set and execute a compelling artistic vision.
- Expertise in financial and operational management, including grant and donor relations.
- Effective communication and presentation skills.
- Experience in multi-disciplinary environments.
Preferred:
- Multi-lingual proficiency.
- Experience with capital projects and unionized environments.
- Active membership in professional visual arts associations.
