About British Art Studies (BAS)
BAS is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to exploring the histories of British art, architecture, and visual culture. It embraces diverse perspectives, challenging traditional boundaries of “British” and promoting innovative methodologies. The journal is co-published by the Paul Mellon Centre (PMC) and the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA).
Role Overview
The Editor-in-Chief will lead BAS’s editorial team, shaping its strategic direction, commissioning new content, and overseeing the editorial process. Working closely with a Managing Editor and contributing editors, the Editor-in-Chief will ensure that BAS maintains its high standards, aligns with the missions of PMC and YCBA, and explores digital publishing innovations.
Responsibilities
Strategy and Management
- Define the strategic direction of BAS in line with its mission.
- Develop publishing policies collaboratively with the editorial team.
- Promote innovative approaches to digital publishing.
Content Development
- Proactively commission articles, features, and themed special issues.
- Handle inquiries from potential contributors.
- Assist in peer review processes and recommend referees.
Editorial Duties
- Review submissions, manage peer-reviewed manuscripts, and decide on publication.
- Guide authors on content and form, ensuring academic excellence.
- Perform line and developmental editing as needed.
Accountability
- Represent BAS at events and within professional networks.
- Manage relationships with authors diplomatically.
- Maintain high academic and professional standards.
Person Specification
Required:
- Experience: Editorial work, collaborative projects, and expertise in British art, architecture, or visual culture.
- Education: PhD in British art history or equivalent experience.
- Skills:
- Proven publication record.
- Strong time-management and multitasking abilities.
- Commitment to confidentiality in the editorial process.
- Ability to work proactively and independently.
Preferred:
- Knowledge or experience in digital publishing.
