Editor of Art History Journal – Association for Art History

Application deadline: 2 October 2026
Honorarium: £8,300 per annum

Location: UK (with travel to the journal’s UK-based editorial office as required)

The Editor of the Association for Art History’s prestigious academic journal, Art History, completes their term of office at the end of June 2027. Applications from UK-based candidates are therefore now sought for this position.

Art History is an international, peer-reviewed journal for original and path-breaking research. Since 1978, it has published essays, critical reviews, and special issues that expand the terms and scope of the discipline, foregrounding new ways of thinking about art and visual culture and their institutions and infrastructures, across a wide range of times and places. The journal champions the cultural and societal relevance of art history. It welcomes contributions from diverse perspectives and positions, with an emphasis on research that addresses broader disciplinary and methodological stakes. Art History is a forum for a variety of historical, critical, historiographical, and theoretical modes of enquiry, seeking out new scholarship in existing fields and in newly imagined ones. Art History welcomes submissions from researchers anywhere, at any career stage, and is committed to peer review as a developmental and ethical process.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates will be expected to have a significant research profile and publication record together with substantial experience of editing. They will demonstrate a compelling vision for the journal in terms of the field at large, as well as in relation to the changing nature of academic publishing. An understanding of how Art History contributes to furthering the wider goals of the Association for Art History will be essential.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the Deputy Editor and Reviews Editor to implement the journal’s vision. The role comprises the following principal responsibilities:

Shaping and leading the strategic direction of the journal
Writing an annual editorial
Soliciting and commissioning material for the journal, including the development and delivery of its special issue programme
Selecting submitted essays in accordance with the journal’s peer review and editorial policies
Editing material selected for publication to meet the journal’s production schedule

Applications, consisting of a CV, a covering letter outlining the candidate’s experience, suitability for the post, and vision for the journal, together with two letters of recommendation, should be sent by email to the Managing Editor (samuel@forarthistory.org.uk) by Friday 2nd October.

It is expected that interviews will be held on Friday 30th October.

Terms of Employment

The position can be combined with regular employment
Supported by the journal’s UK-based editorial office (to which the postholder will be expected to travel from time to time)
The successful candidate shall receive an honorarium of £8,300 per annum
The post is for a period of up to five years, renewable annually
