ABOUT YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE INTERNATIONAL
In summer 2019, the first Yorkshire Sculpture International took place in Leeds and Wakefield. It was the UK’s largest dedicated sculpture festival, a series of exhibitions, international commissions, events and learning programmes with sculpture in its broadest forms on display across the galleries and outdoors in Leeds and Wakefield.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The role will oversee, plan and manage a fully integrated and innovative engagement programme for Yorkshire Sculpture International over a six-month period. Working with the festival’s Producer and with the curatorial and learning teams at Yorkshire Sculpture International’s partner galleries – comprising Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park – the Engagement Curator will make an active contribution to the next phase of YSI’s development and build a collaborative approach to cross-regional engagement and audience development.
The Engagement Curator will work closely with the Producer to lead and manage the engagement programme for teachers, schools and with local communities for Yorkshire Sculpture International. They will also be involved at a strategic level towards the development of the Sculpture Summit and sculpture commissioning programme, and delivering this activity together with the small core Yorkshire Sculpture International team and colleagues across the partnership.
The Engagement Curator will develop the Continuing Professional Development programme for teachers across Leeds and Wakefield, artists’ engagement commissions with schools and communities, workshops and events across a range of disciplines taking place online, in galleries and non-art settings. This is a key role at Yorkshire Sculpture International and requires an experienced curator and educator who is a confident communicator and is able to work with a wide variety of partners.
Developing meaningful long-term partnerships with our diverse local communities in Leeds and Wakefield is integral to our practice. We are also committed to creating opportunities to support artists across Yorkshire and for young people to be closely involved with our projects. The Engagement Curator will help build local and international partnerships, and engage a range of people including schools, families, community groups, students, artists and creative professionals.
YSI is committed to inclusion and equality of opportunity. We particularly welcome and encourage applications from individuals belonging to groups that have been under- represented in the team, but not limited to: Black, Asian and ethnically diverse people; people who identify as LGBTQ+; people with disabilities or from low-income backgrounds. We value difference and recruit by merit based on fair and open competition. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and from all sectors.
