Overview

The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University (ICA at VCU) seeks a visionary leader to serve as Executive Director. This role includes providing strategic direction and creative leadership, shaping ICA as a top arts institution within VCUarts, ranked highly nationally.

Role and Vision

The Executive Director will work under the Dean of VCUarts and have a secondary reporting line to the University Provost. This role encompasses developing a dynamic vision for ICA, driving excellence in programming, and fostering community engagement. The successful candidate might also have the opportunity to teach, depending on their expertise.

Collaboration and Impact

In partnership with VCUarts leadership, the Executive Director will develop inclusive programs that engage and inspire both the VCU community and the broader public. They will support ambitious curatorial projects and foster collaboration across the university to enhance educational and artistic experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mastering knowledge of VCU and its School of the Arts, aligning ICA’s vision with the university’s strategic plans.
  • Developing accessible, innovative programming that embraces contemporary art and technology.
  • Building strong relationships within VCU and the wider arts community, promoting collaboration and interdisciplinary connections.
  • Leading fundraising efforts, financial planning, and organizational development to ensure ICA’s sustainability and growth.
  • Championing community engagement, diversity, and social justice in line with VCU’s mission.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a bold, innovative leader with a deep commitment to contemporary art and a proven track record in arts administration. They should possess:

  • Senior-level experience in an arts organization, with a strong background in contemporary art settings.
  • A history of successful strategic planning and team leadership.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Significant fundraising experience and the capacity to serve as the primary development driver.
  • Excellent communication skills and a master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant field.
