Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art is seeking an Executive Director / Curator to provide visionary leadership and guide the institution’s artistic, strategic, and operational direction. This senior role offers the opportunity to build on Plug In ICA’s 50-year legacy as Canada’s oldest recognized Institute of Contemporary Art, shaping its future impact locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Executive Director / Curator will oversee artistic programming, organizational strategy, fundraising, financial sustainability, and team leadership. Working closely with staff, the Board of Directors, funders, and community stakeholders, the role combines curatorial expertise with executive management responsibilities in a unionized, values-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities

Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for Plug In ICA

Lead and oversee exhibitions, publications, public programmes, and Plug In Editions

Develop and maintain relationships with funders, institutions, donors, and cultural professionals

Lead fundraising activities for operations, capital, and special projects

Oversee financial operations, including budgeting, auditing, and risk management

Direct human resources management, staff development, and organizational culture

Promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility across all operations and programming

Work closely with the Board of Directors on governance, policy development, and long-term planning
Eligibility Criteria

Canadian citizenship or valid permit to work in Canada

Graduate degree in Fine Arts or related field preferred (or equivalent professional experience)

Extensive experience curating exhibitions and producing publications

Demonstrated leadership in organizational and team management

Strong knowledge of contemporary art and visual culture

Excellent communication, financial management, and problem-solving skills
