Purpose of Post
This position involves leading the planning, delivery, and maintenance of exhibitions at the ICA. The role ensures excellence in design, build, procurement, risk management, health and safety, and art care. The postholder will manage the Casual Technical Crew, ensuring adequate staffing and safe working conditions.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Exhibition Planning & Build
- Provide guidance on exhibition design and construction.
- Project manage commissioned art works, collaborating with Curator and artists.
- Ensure safety and compliance in the Gallery.
- Produce exhibition drawings and supervise builds and takedowns.
- Work sustainably, recycling and reusing materials.
- Advise on budgets for technical and exhibition purposes, maintaining production budgets.
Shipping and Registrar Duties
- Manage insurance and shipping for ICA exhibitions.
- Procure services for fine art shipping, exhibition build, and contractors.
- Coordinate with Curatorial team for artwork condition checks.
Care of Works
- Plan installation and de-installation with Curators.
- Oversee technical planning, training of technicians.
- Ensure security and daily maintenance of exhibitions and artworks.
Building & Plans
- Commission and manage architectural plans for galleries.
- Maintain Gallery conditions and liaise with external contractors.
- Manage Exhibitions storage and material reuse.
Health & Safety
- Produce risk assessments and ensure adherence to Health & Safety protocols.
Essential Skills
- Experience with plans, technical specifications, and working with artists and curators.
- Knowledge of art handling and exhibition presentation to museum standards.
- Excellent communication skills, customer service, and ability to work under pressure.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work Act and risk management.
- Understanding of AV requirements and media arts installation.
