Exhibitions Design Lead

Role Purpose

Ensuring that all aspects of the Museum’s exhibition design are delivered in accordance with the target project timeframes in close cooperation with project managers, respective consultants, contractors, fabricators, and DCT subject matter experts. Oversee the overall production of the exhibition design inclusive of (but not limited to); models, scenography, display case production, mounting and armature production, while ensuring all exhibition design projects are aligned with best practices and expected quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Exhibitions Projects Planning & Execution

  • Represent the Museum and be the primary liaison for all design related matters with the projects stakeholders.
  • Actively manage, and be responsible for, all day-to-day project coordination to ensure adherence to the project brief as well as to the programme specifications and allocated budgets.
  • Oversee the design and fabrication process and progress and ensure the deliverables are produced on time and to the level of quality, completeness, coordination, designed to budget, optimized and ensure the technical integrity of the design is achieved and preserved.
  • Assess and control the possible cost, benefits, schedule and technical implications of proposed design changes.

Engagement with Contractors & Stakeholders

  • Coordinate and resolve any conflict or overlap generated by all the design activities prepared by the different appointed consultants and / or contractors.
  • Ensure that the designs to be prepared by the LDC, its sub-consultants and any Design Specialist Consultants are comprehensive and meet the highest standards of performance, sustainability, durability and functionality required for long term operation and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with projects stakeholders in detailed analysis of the basis of design and underlying assumptions of all deliverables.
  • Chair meetings and workshops as required with projects stakeholders.

Quality of Exhibition Projects & Records Management

  • Ensure QA/QC processes are set up and carried out for the project, acting as the DCT QA/QC champion.
  • Responsible for Design integrity and Interdisciplinary design checks and review in coordination with Project Stakeholders to ensure complete satisfaction on design related aspects of all projects.
  • Manage the design review process, and ensure any comments are outlined, and actioned in timely manner.
  • Ensure obtaining design approvals to facilitate the delivery of the project.
  • Ensure proactive design documentation, reporting and filing in a timely and accurate manner.

Exhibition Design Enhancement & Development

  • Adopt and develop appropriate and efficient exhibition design standards.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, methodologies, tools and best practices in exhibitions design.
  • Develop and maintain design guidelines and best practice design recommendations to be passed on to design consultants.

Shared Activity

  • Carry out any other duties and responsibilities related to the role at the request of the direct manager
  • Follow all relevant departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
  • Demonstrate compliance to organization’s values and ethics at all times to support the establishment of a value drive culture within the organization.
  • Contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement and sustainability of systems, processes and practices considering global standards, productivity improvement and cost reduction.

Qualifications

▫ Bachelor’s (Master’s preferred) in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Museum Studies, any other decree within relevant industry.

Experience

  • 5 to 7 years of experience in museums or cultural institution, particularly, in exhibition design, architectural design/construction or experience within similar fields. Preferably, someone with excellent understanding of technical aspects of RIBA Plan of Work and Work Stages. Plus, prior experience and knowledge in cross department design management, design review and technical evaluation teams.
