Our focus is the cultural history of the material world, encompassing diverse disciplines like art and design history, history of technology, philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, and cultural history. We prepare our students for careers in museums, academia, the art world, and publishing through MA and PhD programs, gallery exhibitions, research initiatives, and public programs.
Role Description
As the Director of Exhibitions, you will be a scholar with a wide-ranging intellectual background, curiosity, and visionary thinking. You should hold a Ph.D. in art history or a related field and possess teaching experience at the college or university level. Your curatorial expertise in a museum or gallery is crucial.
In this pivotal role within our institution, which combines a graduate program, public gallery, and research institute, your responsibilities will span the intellectual spectrum of BGC. Your tasks will range from creating exhibitions and offering guidance on curated exhibitions by others to mentoring BGC’s associate curators. You’ll also manage gallery staff and teach courses on curatorial thinking and related topics to our MA and PhD students.
Additionally, you will oversee departmental administration, establish timelines, review contracts, and ensure exhibitions maintain their schedules from inception to completion. Collaborating with the Director and Chair of Academic Programs, you will help shape BGC’s exhibition program for the future, leveraging the unique characteristics of a graduate research institute to create dynamic exhibitions that educate, engage, and captivate audiences in New York and worldwide.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for this role ranges from $150,000 to $175,000, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package.
