Exhibitions Internship, Spring 2017

In addition to gaining a comprehensive perspective of the process of exhibition planning and execution, the Exhibitions Intern will work with Exhibitions Assistant and Coordinators in large-scale SFMOMA Exhibitions history files research and completion project as well as various projects of interest, including but not limited to the circulation of external exhibition proposals.

Department Background:

The Exhibitions Department manages exhibitions programs and projects through the design, technical, installation and administrative teams. Working in conjunction with almost all other departments museum-wide, the Exhibitions department oversees an exhibition’s planning from its conception, offering a broad view of the process of exhibition development at a world-class fine arts museum.

Duration of Internship:

Friday, February 17th, 2017- Friday, April, 28th, 2017

Educational Objective:

  • Skills gained: Exhibitions history research; wide-ranging understanding of exhibitions processes including conception, design, installation and coordination, among others

    • SFMOMA Exhibitions history files
    • External exhibition proposals
    • Other, as identified
  • Transferable skills: research, organization of large volume of documentation materials, general museum exhibitions knowledge, touring exhibition process understanding
  • Jobs this internship prepares someone for: Exhibitions Assistant/ museum assistant, associate and coordination positions in various departments including curatorial, installation, design, content strategy, etc.; entry-level positions in many arts-based non-profits

Under the close supervision of the Exhibitions Co-Directors, the intern(s) will be responsible for:

  • Researching, compiling, and filling in robust SFMOMA exhibitions history files; assist in evaluating, circulating and tracking external exhibition proposals; other responsibilities as identified by Intern and Exhibitions Assistant
  • Interns will be required to attend regular classes to further their understanding of museum careers.

Requirements:

  • Student (graduate or undergraduate) in: fine arts, art history, museum studies, exhibitions design
  • Additional skills, experience etc.: knowledge of and interest in contemporary and modern art and artists, strong organizational and research skills
  • Intern must be available to work every Friday
