About Tauranga Art Gallery
Tauranga Art Gallery (TAG) is a key cultural landmark in Tauranga central. Launched in 2007, its mission is to create exceptional art experiences that engage, inspire, challenge, and educate. TAG is committed to developing an exhibition program that reflects and grows regional identity. As a public art gallery, it values, represents, and advocates for the rich and broad visual arts culture in Aotearoa New Zealand. The gallery aims to be a hub for cultural inclusiveness, engaging a range of stakeholders to promote Tauranga’s unique identity and sustain relationships and practices that express Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Position Purpose
- Oversee planning, organization, and delivery of the gallery’s exhibition program and collection care workstreams.
- Design, plan, and manage technical aspects of installation and deinstallation of exhibitions.
- Oversee building maintenance and Health & Safety at TAG.
- Contribute as a member of the Leadership Team, building strong collaborative relationships across departments.

Internal: Director, Curator, Registrar, Experience and Innovation Manager, Events Coordinator, Educators, Marketing Manager, Kaitohutohu Toi Māori
External: Artists, creative sector, tertiary institutions, collectors, patrons, donors, sponsors, media, iwi, hāpu
Position Priorities
Leadership and Management:
- Provide leadership and motivation to the Exhibitions team.
- Ensure professional development accountability and maintain a positive team culture.
- Build and nurture a team culture that embodies the values of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Manage the Exhibition and Collections budgets.
- Ensure Health and Safety compliance and lead the committee.
Exhibitions:
Before Opening:
- Develop designs for the exhibition program with the Curator.
- Purchase equipment for installation and deinstallation.
- Coordinate the project team and contractors.
Once Open:
- Manage deinstallation and installation of exhibitions.
- Present exhibition spaces to a high standard.
- Ensure all technical systems are operational.
Collection / Art Handling:
Before Opening:
- Oversee relocation of the collection and storage facility fit-out.
Once Open:
- Ensure safety, storage, and transit of objects on display, in collection, and on loan.
Building:
Before Opening:
- Assist in implementing the gallery fit-out work program.
Once Open:
- Ensure the gallery building is maintained to a high standard.
- Oversee security, cleaning, and building management contractors.
- Monitor building systems and ensure timely maintenance.
- Manage Health & Safety issues for staff and visitors.

Qualifications and Experience
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in an art gallery, museum, or similar cultural organization.
- Experience in leading a team and managing its performance.
- Ability to budget, plan, and manage complex workflows.
- Proficiency in exhibition design.
- Understanding of the role of a public art gallery at a regional level.
