Simon Fraser University is seeking an Exhibitions Manager for the Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum, a new facility on SFU’s Burnaby campus that supports artist-led learning and research-driven contemporary art programming. Reporting to the Director, this role oversees the planning, coordination, and delivery of the museum’s ambitious exhibitions program, including publications, off-site projects, and public events. The position requires deep experience in exhibition development, strong leadership abilities, and the capacity to represent the museum’s values in all internal and external relationships.
About the Role
The Exhibitions Manager develops the exhibition schedule, budgets, and contracts; supports curators and artists; and coordinates research and production across university units and external partners. The role supervises the curatorial team and manages workflows for exhibitions, collections activities, commissions, and touring projects. Responsibilities include organizing planning meetings, liaising with other museum departments, supporting government grant applications, and ensuring alignment with the museum’s ethics and commitments, including its acknowledgement of and engagement with unceded Indigenous territories.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee planning and coordination of exhibitions, publications, and special projects.
- Develop exhibition schedules, budgets, and contracts.
- Support project curators, guest curators, and participating artists.
- Facilitate research and production between artists, academic units, and community members.
- Supervise curatorial and collections teams and manage their workflow.
- Coordinate inbound and outbound touring exhibitions.
- Organize exhibitions-related planning meetings and act as liaison across departments.
- Represent the Gibson Art Museum to artists, vendors, and professional partners.
- Support Director with government grant applications.
- Ensure all projects align with the museum’s values of inclusion, community engagement, and critical cultural dialogue.
Eligibility Criteria
- Master’s degree in Art History, Visual Art, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, or related field.
- Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in exhibitions budgeting, planning, and production.
- Extensive knowledge of exhibition development and implementation.
- Strong understanding of contemporary artistic practice (regional and international).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organizational, strategic, and project management abilities.
- Advanced skills with MS Office and Google Workspace.
- Experience supervising multidisciplinary staff.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse teams.
