Carol Bates Fellow – Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, USA
Position Type: Fellowship (30 hours per week)
Salary: $18.75/hour (Total compensation: $18,000 for an 8-month appointment)
Location: Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD
About the Role
The Carol Bates Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the Walters Art Museum’s learning and community engagement initiatives. Reporting to the Manager of Evaluation and Audience Impact, the Fellow will conduct audience research to understand visitor perceptions and experiences, with an emphasis on historically underrepresented groups. This role involves implementing exit interview processes, conducting visitor observations, and analyzing data to create actionable insights for the museum.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect visitor data through surveys, interviews, and observations, adhering to data collection protocols.
- Recruit participants, ensuring inclusivity in research practices.
- Record and clean quantitative and qualitative data using tools like Word, Excel, and Google Sheets.
- Conduct analysis using descriptive statistics and hand coding.
- Create a PowerPoint presentation summarizing findings with visuals and charts.
- Collaborate on professional development activities designed for emerging professionals.
- Work one weekend day or Thursday evening per week as needed for inclusive data collection.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in art/museum education, education, psychology, sociology, or a related humanities discipline.
Skills and Experience:
- Comfortable engaging with visitors, including initiating conversations and handling declines gracefully.
- Detail-oriented with strong note-taking and data accuracy skills.
- Analytical thinker with experience in data collection and entry protocols.
- High emotional intelligence for responsive and inclusive interview practices.
- Commitment to equity and anti-racist research methodologies.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical ability to interact with visitors for extended periods (3–4 hours).
Compensation and Benefits:
