General Idea Fellowship – National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Canada

The National Gallery of Canada invites applications for the General Idea Fellowship, which supports advanced research in contemporary art. This fellowship is open to international candidates and focuses on utilizing the Gallery’s collections, including the Art Metropole Collection, the General Idea fonds, and the AA Bronson collection.

Fellowship Details

  • Tenure: One-year research residency at the National Gallery of Canada, beginning May 31, 2025.

  • Funding: Up to $15,000 CAD, covering expenses and/or a stipend.

  • Research Areas: Contemporary art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, artists’ books, video, and installation.

Eligibility

Open to art historians, curators, critics, conservators, graduate students, and independent researchers working in visual arts, museology, or related humanities and social sciences disciplines.

Application Requirements

  • A three-page research proposal including aims, methodology, and anticipated outcomes.

  • A bibliography of primary and secondary sources and details on required resources.

  • A timeline and budget, outlining eligible expenses such as relocation, subsistence, and project-related costs.

  • A curriculum vitae detailing education, professional history, awards, and publications.

  • Information on other grants applied for or received during the fellowship period.

  • One letter of recommendation, sent separately by the referee.

  • Examples of previous work (textual, visual, or both).

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on significance, originality, feasibility, and how the research engages with the Gallery’s collections. Priority will be given to projects with a public dissemination component (exhibition, publication, or digital outreach).
