The Elaine and Alexandre Rosenberg Fellowship at The Museum of Modern Art offers advanced training in archives, library science, and museum research practice, with a focus on modern and contemporary art and the historical legacy of Paul Rosenberg & Company.
The fellowship is embedded within MoMA’s Archives, Library & Research Collections (ALRC), one of the most important research infrastructures in global contemporary art institutions. Fellows gain hands-on experience in archival work, reading room operations, preservation practices, and original research.
About the Role
The fellow will work under the supervision of the Head of Archives Services and participate in both daily operational work and long-term research projects within the Paul Rosenberg Archives and MoMA’s library systems.
The position combines archival support, research development, collections management, and participation in MoMA’s institutional fellowship training programme, including cross-departmental mentorship and professional development sessions.
Responsibilities
- Provide reference, circulation, and service support to museum staff and researchers
- Support daily ALRC operations including paging and reshelving materials
- Assist with delivery of archival and library materials for research appointments
- Supervise reading room users and support reference activities
- Perform preservation tasks including labeling, access copies, and protective enclosures
- Maintain stack areas through shelf reading, shifting, and spatial organisation
- Assist in digitization projects across archival and library collections
- Conduct original research in the Paul Rosenberg Archives
- Present research findings contributing to ongoing scholarship
- Participate in MoMA’s fellowship training and professional development programme
- Support institutional projects and perform related duties as required
Candidate Profile
- B.A. or M.A. in Art History or related discipline
- Strong interest in archival, library, or information science work
- Knowledge of modern and contemporary art preferred
- Reading knowledge of foreign languages desirable (French preferred)
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Detail-oriented and comfortable working with physical collections
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and work with shelving systems
- Demonstrated interest in museum research and archival practice
