The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Fellowship in Photograph Conservation

Work schedule: Hybrid eligible; hours vary based on position
Salary: USD 53,045 – 55,000 per year, plus a research-related travel allowance

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is offering a two-year, post-graduate fellowship in photograph conservation, generously endowed by The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. This full-time fellowship provides advanced, hands-on experience in the conservation, preservation, and research of photographic works within a leading international museum context.

The Mapplethorpe Conservation Fellow will work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary conservation lab, contributing to the care of the Guggenheim’s photographic collections. A central component of the fellowship is participation in an ongoing research initiative focused on the museum’s Robert Mapplethorpe Collection, comprising 194 photographs and unique objects spanning the artist’s entire career. Research activities will support a technical investigation into the physical and chemical characteristics of these works.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine, analyze, and treat photographs from the Guggenheim collection under the supervision of the Senior Conservator

  • Prepare loan evaluations and participate in exhibition and loan meetings

  • Examine, document, and advise on new acquisitions

  • Produce written and photographic documentation, including condition reports, treatment proposals, technical notes, and installation instructions

  • Assist in maintaining a modern, well-equipped conservation lab

  • Advise on appropriate handling, storage, and housing for photographic materials

  • Contribute to preventive conservation discussions, including environmental monitoring and emergency preparedness

  • Act as courier for works of art in transit, when required

  • Adhere to the principles of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice

Skills and Experience Requirements

  • Recent graduate of a master’s-level conservation program, specializing in photograph conservation

  • Excellent hand skills

  • Knowledge of collections management databases, imaging techniques, and conservation documentation methods

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities

  • Experience or familiarity with handheld XRF and radiation safety (preferred)

  • Demonstrated interest in modern and contemporary art
