The Allen Fellowship

Applications are invited for the newly-created Allen Fellowship at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. This fixed two-year Fellowship, named in honour of the distinguished former Director of Studies at the Centre, Dr Brian Allen, is designed to provide a post-doctoral student with the opportunity of pursuing a stimulating programme of scholarly research and of developing a wide-ranging portfolio of academic, curatorial and administrative skills.

The Allen Fellow’s responsibilities will include working with senior colleagues on two major research projects being developed at the Centre. The first, led by Dr Martin Postle, will focus on the collection and display of art at the British country house. The second, led by Mark Hallett and Sarah Victoria Turner, will focus on the history of the Royal Academy summer exhibition from 1769 to 2018. The Allen Fellow will also be expected to assist colleagues in organising a new series of small exhibitions – to be entitled Drawing Room Displays – showcasing materials from our library and archives. Towards the end of the Fellowship, they will have the opportunity to curate one such exhibition. The Fellow will also contribute to the Centre’s growing programme of digital research projects. The Fellow will be granted a weekly research day in which to pursue her or his own research.

Any further queries about the post should be addressed to the Centre’s Director of Studies, Professor Mark Hallett – email: mhallett@paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk

The starting salary will be in the range £24,000-£27,000 per annum, depending on experience. The post is available from 1st October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The closing date for applications is midnight on 17th July 2015.

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art is committed to promoting equality and diversity.
