Fire Station Artists’ Studios Dublin: Open call Curator Residencies

Fire Station Artists’ Studios in Dublin, Ireland is inviting curators to apply for short term flexible residencies in Fire Station for 2015-2016.  The aim of this residency programme is to provide opportunities for international curators to familiarise themselves with the Irish visual art scene, undergo research and make connections. Through these residencies Fire Station aims to build links and foster collaborations between Irish artists, curators, art institutions and their artistic peers internationally.

During this period, Fire Station facilitates a series of studio visits and meetings with artists and professionals involved in the Irish contemporary arts sector. Fire Station aims to invite up 8-10 international curators each year, the duration of the residency is between 1 week to 1 month depending on needs of the curator, and there is no structured outcome required.

What the Curator Residency offers:

• Free combined live and work studio (includes heat, light, Wi-Fi) in the Fire Station Artists Studios which is located in Dublin’s city centre.
• €200 award towards travel.
• Structured support to curator depending on their research needs as well as introductions to artists, art institutions, curators, galleries in Dublin city and nationwide.

• Free access to Fire Station facilities: i.e. Digital media resource centre, equipment, meeting room, reading area. For full list of facilities www.firestation.ie/facilities
• While on residency the curator will take part in agreed number of studio visits with Fire Station Artists.

The advantage for an international curator visiting Dublin and Fire Station Artists’ Studios is easy access to a dynamic and growing visual art scene within a city that is compact and easy to access by foot. Fire Station has an established reputation spanning 20 years of work which will ensure easy access to both public and private art institutions, directors, curators, and artists at all levels. Our Dublin city centre location is within walking distance of all major galleries both public and private and artists’ studios which are located close to Dublin city centre. In addition Fire Station is located close to national rail and bus transport lines with easy access to the cities of Cork, Galway, Limerick and Belfast which all have distinct and vibrant art scenes.

Fire Station Artists’ Studios

Located in Dublin’s north inner city, Fire Station Artists’ Studios was established in 1993 to support professional visual artists. It provides ten subsidised combined living and working studios for Irish and international artists as well as large scale sculpture workshop facilities for day hire.

In addition Fire Station provides digital media facilities and equipment, project/meeting room space as well as training opportunities for artists which combines the practical with the conceptual. A key policy of Fire Station is to support socially engaged arts practice and critique through art commissions, talks and publications. It promote international opportunities for Irish artists through international artists’ exchanges, and a curator in residence programme. Some past commissioned projects include: ‘Troubling Ireland’ (2010-11) a think tank for artists with Danish curatorial collective Kutatorisk Aktion, and Two Monuments: ‘Artur Zmijewski’ (2009).
