Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian – Director
Closing date for applications: Monday 15th December 2014.
The Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation invite applications for the post of Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum to succeed the current Director, Joao Castel-Branco Pereira, who is retiring, and with additional responsibilities for fostering the collaboration with the Centre de Arte Moderna (CAM), in articulation with the Director, Isabel Carlos.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, one of the world’s best small museums, built to house the Collection of the Founder, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, displays about a thousand items from the Collection of fine and decorative arts covering the art of Antiquity and Oriental art with a strong Islamic presence, and a fine collection of European art with a strong core of French 18th century works. The CAM holds the most significant collection of modern and contemporary Portuguese art in Portugal as well as an important collection of 20th century British and Armenian art.
The new Director will have responsibility for the leadership, management and efficient operation of the Museum and will also lead the implementation of a management plan which, by 2017, will present a unified structure in support of the visual and decorative arts activities of the Foundation. He or she will develop the strategy which will lead, from 2017, to the delivery of an inter-related programme of exhibitions, outreach and learning activities that can attract audiences in greater numbers and diversity.
In this significant role, the Trustees seek candidates of international standing with creative and artistic vision who can work across the breadth of the collections and who can bring and be open to new ideas to engage audiences locally, nationally and internationally. They will have good change management skills, strong networking and communications skills and will uphold the mission of the Founder, embodied in the work of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, spanning the areas of science, the arts, education and social welfare
