About kó

kó is an art space based in Lagos dedicated to promoting modern and contemporary art. Its programme combines a commitment to championing Nigeria’s leading modern artists with the presentation of emerging and established contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora.

The gallery presents a programme of solo and group exhibitions at its space in Ikoyi. It has supported several emerging African and diasporic artists, including practitioners who have participated in its Lagos residency programme.

kó has also developed projects with prominent Nigerian artists from the 1940s to the 1980s, seeking to reinvigorate discussions surrounding the country’s modernist and postcolonial art movements. Artists presented through this work include Ben Enwonwu, Obiora Udechukwu, Nike Davies-Okundaye, Jimo Akolo, Demas Nwoko, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Yusuf Grillo, Uzo Egonu, Twins Seven-Seven, Jimoh Buraimoh, Muraina Oyelami, Adebisi Fabunmi and Rufus Ogundele.

The gallery has participated in international art fairs including Art Basel Miami Beach, Frieze Masters, Frieze Sculpture, The Armory Show, Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art, Untitled Art, EXPO Chicago, Art SG, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, ART X Lagos and editions of 1-54 in New York, Marrakech and Paris.

Artists represented or supported by kó have entered institutional collections including Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the High Museum of Art, Princeton University Art Museum, the Wellin Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum, Fondation H and Proyectos Públicos.

kó was launched by Kavita Chellaram, an art collector and founder of Arthouse Contemporary. Chellaram has contributed to the development of Nigeria’s modern and contemporary art market and the international recognition of numerous African modernist artists.

In 2015, she established the Arthouse Foundation, a non-profit residency programme that has organised more than 30 artist residencies in Lagos.
