Canal Projects is a non-profit contemporary art institution dedicated to supporting forward-thinking international artists at pivotal moments in their careers. Through production, exhibition, research and interpretation of this work we intend to foster artistic practices that challenge and reflect on the current moment. Located in the Soho neighborhood of New York City, Canal Projects launches September 2022.

We are looking for a dynamic Gallery Operations Manager to act as a key member of our small team reporting directly to the Artistic Director. The role is full-time permanent beginning in June 2022 on a Monday – Friday schedule. The Gallery Operations Manager will work closely with the curatorial staff on exhibition planning and installation, performance production, and day-to-day operations of the gallery. This position is for a creative problem-solver interested in working as a team to put forward exciting and experimental programs to a diverse audience. As a founding team member, this role has the opportunity for growth and to help shape the organization.

This role is ideal for a manager level problem-solver who has worked as a lead preparator or hands-on registrar within a museum, large gallery, or theatrical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, monitor and revise exhibition plans that outline the workflow and deadlines for four major exhibitions, up to six smaller programs and three performances annually
  • Coordinate with the Artistic Director in development of and maintenance of exhibition production budgets
  • Hire and act as primary point of contact for exhibition-related contractors and vendors
  • Ability to both oversee a team for complicated exhibition installations and complete smaller art handling related tasks solo
  • Work closely with the other staff in preparing, communicating and implementing exhibition timelines
  • Ability to troubleshoot audio-visual equipment
  • Work with gallery interns as assigned

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years experience working in an art gallery, museum, or art studio in a role related to exhibitions management, technical production or as lead art handler
  • Strong understanding of art handling and transportation best practices and experience with fine arts insurance
  • Ability to lift and carry items of up to 40 lbs, use ladders, and standard power tools
  • Experience with the standard audio visual equipment used in a visual arts environment
  • Experience finding and hiring necessary vendors, technical consultants and art handlers for exhibition production
  • Flexible schedule to work evenings and weekends for scheduled exhibition openings and events
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency on Mac and PC including MS Office, Photoshop and preferably SketchUp

The Operations Manager position is full-time with a salary range of $60,000-65,000 and a generous benefits package. Starting in late July, this position requires a Monday through Friday schedule on-site at our Soho offices.
