Guest Curator Role Description
This is an opportunity to work with an upcoming contemporary art gallery based in Los Angeles, CA. The gallery is in the process of outfitting DON’T LOOK Projects’ space and is seeking visionary Guest Curators to curate the inaugural exhibitions. The gallery is dedicated to showcasing work by emerging and established artists, fostering a vibrant and inclusive art community. The gallery believes in the power of art to inspire, provoke, and challenge, and are committed to creating a platform for artists to thrive.
Position Overview
The Guest Curator will be responsible for developing and executing a compelling exhibition concept that aligns with the gallery’s mission and vision. This is a unique opportunity to shape the gallery’s identity and introduce a fresh perspective to the Los Angeles art scene. Successful applicants will receive an exhibition budget that includes provisions for curatorial and artists’ fees, as well as installation and exhibition materials.
Responsibilities
- Conceptualization: Develop a comprehensive exhibition concept that reflects a strong curatorial vision and resonates with a contemporary audience.
- Artist Selection: Research, identify, and select a diverse group of artists whose work aligns with the exhibition concept.
- Exhibition Development: Collaborate with the gallery team to develop the exhibition’s narrative, thematic focus, and overall presentation.
- Catalogue and Press Materials: Contribute to the creation of exhibition-related materials, including press releases, catalogue essays, and promotional materials.
- Installation and De-installation (on-site or remote): Support the installation and de-installation of the exhibition, working closely with the gallery staff and artists.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with the gallery team on marketing, sales, and publicity efforts related to the exhibition.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a guest curator or independent curator with a strong track record of successful exhibitions.
- Deep knowledge of contemporary art and a passion for emerging artists.
- Excellent research, analytical, and conceptual skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Location
The gallery is located in a vibrant Los Angeles arts district, near BLUM, Honor Fraser, and other notable LA galleries.
Compensation
The Guest Curator position is a contract/freelance role with a competitive compensation package. Successful applicants will receive an exhibition budget that includes provisions for curatorial and artists’ fees, as well as installation and exhibition materials.
