Hazar Residency
Translation from French:
HAZAR RESIDENCY
Tunis ↔ Casablanca ↔ Marseille
Nessij — a collective dedicated to supporting the Tunisian arts scene — is partnering with Daret (Casablanca), a residency space that fosters Morocco’s young artistic and cultural scene, and Artagon Marseille, a space devoted to emerging creation, to offer a joint residency for 2025-2026 between Tunis, Casablanca and Marseille.
The aim of the programme is to encourage and facilitate exchanges between the artistic scenes of the three cities.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
19 May 2025
Research residency at Daret, Casablanca (Morocco)
This one-month research residency is aimed at Tunisian researchers and curators interested in the artistic and cultural scenes of Casablanca — and more broadly Morocco — and Marseille.
The resident will receive:
-
guidance from the Daret team, including logistical support and networking within Casablanca’s cultural and artistic circles;
-
a private bedroom and bathroom in a 150 m² shared apartment with two Moroccan artists in residence at Daret, plus access to shared workspaces;
-
a living allowance of €900 for the entire residency;
-
a research/production grant of €200;
-
round-trip international travel covered.
Programme structure
The call is open to curators and researchers based in Tunisia who wish to undertake:
-
a research residency at Daret (Casablanca) in July 2025, then
-
a follow-up residency at Artagon Marseille (France) in 2026.
Applicants must propose a research project to be deepened first in Morocco and later in Marseille, show strong interest in collaborative inquiry, and be able to live communally in a shared space.
Applications will be reviewed by the teams at Daret and Artagon Marseille. Nessij does not sit on the selection committee.
Selection criteria
The jury will pay particular attention to:
-
the artistic quality of the portfolio and research proposal;
-
how firmly the proposal is rooted first in the Moroccan context, then in the Marseille context, and the necessity of residencies at Daret and Artagon Marseille;
-
the research methodology already outlined for developing the residency project.
Application materials
Applications for the HAZAR residency programme must be submitted via this form and include:
-
Portfolio (PDF, max 20 pages) presenting past or current projects and research;
-

Partners
NESSIJ
Nessij (“web” in Arabic) is a collective founded in 2023 by Tunisian artists and art-workers to support and promote Tunisia’s artistic and cultural scene internationally. In a climate of creative effervescence and increasingly restrictive borders, Nessij works to improve the mobility of Tunisian artists, works and cultural professionals, and to strengthen exchanges and solidarity between southern artistic scenes.
DARET
Founded in 2021 by artist Ymane Fakhir, Daret is a non-profit artist residency in Casablanca that offers an apartment-studio where living and working spaces are one. It runs two residencies:
-
an annual programme for two young Moroccan artists selected through an open call;
-
a mobility-focused programme built through international partnerships that periodically hosts artists, researchers and curators.
ARTAGON MARSEILLE
Housed in a former nursery school (2 000 m²) provided by the City of Marseille in the Saint-Tronc district, Artagon Marseille is a work, production and resource centre for emerging creative practices. Its main purpose is to support early-career artists and cultural professionals based in Marseille or the region across all creative fields. Since April 2024 the site has hosted a cohort of around 30 artists, organisations and cultural project leaders, who receive 12 months of support and take part in the venue’s activities.
