The Design Museum Brussels seeks a Head of Collections and Research to manage, study, and enhance its collections, including the Plastic Design Collection (1950s to present) and Belgian Design, while strengthening the museum’s role as a reference institution in design history.
Key Responsibilities
- Curate and present collections, renew displays, and develop mediation tools in collaboration with the Exhibitions Department.
- Organize temporary exhibitions, integrate collection pieces into external curatorial projects, and support academic and school research.
- Conduct scientific research on the collections, contribute to museum publications and external scholarly outputs, and participate in conferences.
- Support digitization and public engagement initiatives.
- Develop and enrich collections (objects, documents, library) in collaboration with the Conservation Department.
- Maintain professional networks to support collection growth.
- Manage administrative aspects: acquisition, registration, documentation.
Requirements
- Expertise in design history, particularly Belgian and 20th-century design.
- Knowledge of museology and collections management.
- Proven experience in scientific research, publications, and museum practice.
- Skills in documentation, inventory, and preventive conservation.
- Excellent writing, communication, and collaborative skills.
- Strong organizational abilities, administrative rigor, and autonomy.
- Fluent in French, Dutch, and English.
- Master’s degree in Art History, Design, Museology, or related fields.
- Confirmed experience in a similar museum or heritage institution role.
