About the job
Summary
The National Archives (TNA) is the official archive of the UK government and for England and Wales, and makes a vast collection of historical records dating back over 1,000 years available to the public. TNA is also an Independent Research Organisation (IRO), meaning we are eligible to lead UKRI-funded research. Complementing our deep collections and subject expertise, interdisciplinary research into all aspects of our collections and activities is at the heart of what we do, as we seek to create new knowledge that advances understanding in archives, our shared heritage, and the wider community to change lives for the better. We work with our vast collections and a diverse range of national and international university, heritage and industry partners on creative and distinctive research in areas including humanities and social science research into our collections, applied digital research, archival and information science, and heritage science and conservation.
We have made a significant investment in our Research and Academic Engagement Department which leads, conducts, enables and disseminates dynamic and adventurous research. This stimulating environment provides the opportunity to develop programmes of applied collaborative research into our practice and collections that draw on expertise across TNA. In addition to our research activities, the team runs research training and academic programmes for colleagues across TNA, for the academic community, and for students, including our doctoral training partnership, collaborative doctoral partnerships, and student placements.
In alignment with our other areas of research activity, we are developing strategic programmes of collections research with colleagues across TNA. Current collaborative projects with external partners include: the Irish Government-funded Beyond 2022 project to create an open-access, virtual reconstruction of Dublin’s Record Treasury destroyed in 1922; transcribing and analysing letters and related records of the poor that relate to the Poor Law, between 1834 and 1900; investigating the use of machine learning for visual search of design collections; studying documents seized by the British Royal Navy from captured enemy ships during wars at sea between the 16th and 19th centuries; into the political activity of the archbishops of York, 1304–1405; and into the watermarks of Isaac Newton’s papers. We embrace opportunities to innovate in methods and approaches in all aspects of our work, in line with our research priorities and corporate vision, Archives for Everyone.
