The National Archives is seeking a Head of Collections Research to lead groundbreaking research initiatives within its Research, Grants and Academic Engagement Department. This permanent, full-time role offers a salary of £50,489 – £53,000 per annum and is based in Kew, London, with flexible work options. Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategic research plan aligned with TNA’s corporate vision.
- Conduct and disseminate impactful research that enhances understanding of TNA’s extensive collection.
- Manage strategic research programs, leading funded projects and building interdisciplinary networks.
- Engage with national and international collections, representing TNA to diverse audiences.
- Provide expertise, training, and mentorship to foster research growth across the organization.
- Identify key research fields where TNA can contribute uniquely and strengthen TNA’s business development for collections research.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Doctorate or equivalent experience in collections, heritage research, or a related field pertinent to TNA’s collections.
- Proven track record in strategic planning and securing funding for collections research.
- Recognized authority in collections or heritage research with a broad academic and heritage network.
- Leadership and collaboration skills with the ability to build relationships across various internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience as Principal or Co-Investigator on research projects, managing competing priorities to deliver quality research.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to varied audiences and publishing academic work.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in the heritage sector or archives.
- Familiarity with archival practice, environmental humanities, or global histories.
- Team leadership experience, with strong delegation and project management skills.
