Head of Exhibitions – Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is seeking a Head of Exhibitions responsible for designing the museum’s four-year exhibition programme and managing all aspects of exhibition projects. The role includes overseeing budgets, coordinating with internal departments and external collaborators, and leading the exhibitions team. The position also involves promoting parallel activities such as lectures and symposia related to exhibitions.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise the creation and execution of exhibitions.
- Manage economic aspects: budgets, expenditures, contracts, and resources.
- Act as the main liaison among curators, artists, designers, restorers, technicians, administration, marketing, and other stakeholders.
- Lead, motivate, and develop the exhibitions team, ensuring high performance and a positive work environment.
- Support ancillary projects like conferences, symposia, and public programming.
Requirements
- University degree and a Master in Museology.
- Minimum 10 years of experience curating international exhibitions.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as head of exhibitions in museums or similar cultural institutions.
- High-level written and spoken English and French.
Desirable
- Publications and conference experience on temporary exhibitions.
- Knowledge of the Thyssen-Bornemisza collections and major public/private collections.
- Experience with GS Microsoft TMS database, exhibition lighting, and project management.
- Leadership, team management, negotiation, and organizational skills.
- Creativity, flexibility, attention to detail, and aesthetic sensitivity.
Selection Process
- Phase 1: Evaluation of professional and educational merits.
- Phase 2: Interviews with selected candidates, including discussion of exhibition projects and professional expertise.
- The final candidate will be proposed by the Selection Committee and ratified by the Board of Trustees of the Fundación Colección Thyssen-Bornemisza.
