The Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main is seeking a Head of Installation (d/m/w) for the Kunsthalle Portikus. The role ensures the planning, execution, and production of exhibitions, working closely with the curator, artists, students, and external partners. Portikus is an integral part of the Städelschule and a vital platform for contemporary art, presenting around four exhibitions each year, often featuring new productions by emerging and established artists.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions in coordination with the curator and artists
- Train and guide international fine arts students in technical and installation practices
- Organize installation schedules and manage the setup team
- Liaise between artists and Portikus regarding spatial and technical possibilities
- Source materials, manage the tool room, and ensure maintenance and safety standards
- Prepare artworks for transport or archiving after exhibitions
- Develop solutions for material handling, fabrication, and display challenges
Qualifications
- University degree in a relevant field, ideally with an artistic background
- Experience in art handling, exhibition production, and working with contemporary artists
- Strong technical knowledge and hands-on skills with diverse materials and power tools
- Methodical and didactic abilities; experience teaching or mentoring students preferred
- Creative and solution-oriented approach to technical challenges
- Excellent communication and coordination skills
- Fluent German and very good English
