Head of Programme (Engagement and Learning)

Location:  Studio 144
Salary:   £30,395 to £37,345 Per annum
Full Time Permanent (Flexible working considered)
Closing Date:  Monday 12 November 2018

John Hansard Gallery – a leading public gallery of contemporary art that is part of the University of Southampton and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation – is seeking to appoint an experienced Head of Programme (Engagement and Learning) who will be a key member of the Programming and Senior Management Teams at this exciting moment for the Gallery. The successful applicant will oversee the development of the Engagement Team, leading, researching and managing the delivery of our acclaimed and innovative engagement and learning programme – in line with our 2018-22 strategic business plan, the University’s Arts and Culture Strategy, ACE priorities and the Creative Case for Diversity.

Extensive previous experience working at a senior level in gallery or museum education is essential: from strategic planning and implementation, to working with contemporary artists and curators, and to developing ongoing relationships with external organisations and community groups. Knowledge and experience of current developments within arts engagement programmes, education policies, national networks, and programmes such as Arts Award and Arts Mark are essential, as are excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills.

John Hansard Gallery (established in 1979) plays a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region, through its locally engaged and internationally acclaimed programme. The Gallery has entered a new chapter in its history by recently relocating and relaunching in a newly purpose-built gallery – part of Studio 144 in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. The relocation has tripled the gallery space available and provides an opportunity for greater impact, both in terms of artists’ production and reaching diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

Shortlisting will commence soon after the closing date with interviews being scheduled for week commencing 3rd December 2018.
