The mission is to support artists, curators, galleries, and institutions in Austria. It aims to strengthen their presence in the international contemporary art scene, enabling the production and exhibition of new artworks and their donation to public collections.

Achievements

Since 2014, over 100 exhibition and publication projects worldwide have received support through an application-based process. The application deadline for funding collaborations in 2025 is Monday, September 16, 2024.

Application Criteria

  • Projects should present the work of Austrian or Austria-based artists.
  • Applications should be submitted by museums, biennials, and other non-commercial institutions located outside Austria.
  • Applications should be submitted in English and include all requested information in the application form.

Application Process

The application form, selection criteria, and more details can be found on the Phileas website.

About Phileas

Phileas was founded in Vienna in 2014 as an independent philanthropic organization funded by private members’ contributions. In 2023, a partnership with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service, and Sport led to the creation of Phileas—The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art.

Activities

Phileas publishes an annual series of artist monographs and maintains an Artist Library of exhibition catalogs and portfolios for research and consultation at the Vienna office. Support is provided to the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale through fundraising, publishing, and historical research. Phileas is also the commissioner of the first Austrian Pavilion at the Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, in 2024. An active Visitor Programme invites international curators and critics to Austria throughout the year to visit artists’ studios, galleries, museums, and artist-run spaces.
