Junior Professorship (W1) in Artificial Intelligence in the Arts and Art Studies

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) invites applications for a Junior Professorship (W1) in Artificial Intelligence in the Arts and Art Studies. This fixed-term position (3 years, extendable to 6 after positive evaluation) seeks an interdisciplinary scholar combining expertise in art history or related disciplines with strong methodological and technical knowledge in artificial intelligence and digital methods.

The role focuses on advancing research and teaching at the intersection of AI technologies and the arts, contributing to the development of Digital Humanities and fostering collaboration across disciplines.

Position Details

  • Contract: Fixed-term (3 years, extendable to 6 years after evaluation)
  • Salary: W1 (German academic salary scale)
  • Start date: As soon as possible
  • No tenure-track option

Eligibility Criteria

  • Completed university degree and outstanding PhD
  • PhD must typically have been completed within the last 4 years (extensions possible for caregiving responsibilities)
  • Interdisciplinary profile combining art studies and AI/digital methods
  • Proven research excellence (publications, projects, or funding)
  • Experience in teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Desirable: experience developing digital tools or methods for artistic research

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research initiatives, collaborate with national and international partners, and help integrate AI and Digital Humanities into the department’s academic framework.
