About the residency
La Nueva Fábrica (LNF) is a nonprofit contemporary art space in Antigua, Guatemala. Founded in a former textile factory, LNF is dedicated to fostering experimentation, critical dialogue, and community engagement through exhibitions, public programs, residencies, and education.
Founded in 2013, the residency program is the heart of LNF. We welcome emerging and established artists, curators, and cultural practitioners from Guatemala and around the world.
The residency is:
- Research-based, not production-driven: there are no requirements to produce a final work.
- Open to all career stages and artistic mediums.
- A space to reflect, research, share, and connect across practices and communities.
- Designed to foster exchange with our local context: residents are encouraged to participate in LNF’s public programs, open studios, and community events.
- Each year, LNF selects five residents through its international open call.
Residency details
- Duration: 4–8 weeks, to be coordinated with the LNF team.
- Dates: between September 1, 2027 and June 30, 2028.
- Location: Antigua, Guatemala.
Residents:
- Duos may apply together.
- Applicants with children are welcome.
Benefits
- USD $2,000 stipend.
- Housing on-site at LNF (fully equipped house).
- Airport transfers from and to La Aurora International Airport, Guatemala City.
- Curatorial and logistical support from LNF staff.
- Opportunities to engage the public through LNF programming.
- Note: National and international travel to LNF is the responsibility of the resident.
Eligibility
- Open to individuals aged 18+ of any nationality.
- No degree or formal training required.
- Applicants must show that their residency and research proposal holds a direct or meaningful connection to LNF’s context.
- Applicants must submit a residency and research proposal that presents a clear methodology and demonstrates its feasibility within the framework and timeline of the residency.
- Applicants must demonstrate commitment to their practice and a genuine interest in engaging with our community.
- Basic Spanish is helpful but not required.
- LNF welcomes applications from individuals of all backgrounds and does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, religion, nationality, marital status, ancestry, ethnicity, ability, or sexual orientation.

Frequently asked questions
On what basis will residents be selected?
Residents will be selected according to the following criteria:
- A residency and research proposal that demonstrates a direct or meaningful connection to LNF’s context.
- A clear methodology and proven feasibility of the proposal within the framework and timeline of the residency.
- A demonstrated commitment to their practice and a genuine interest in engaging with our community.
Where will I stay?
Residents are housed in an on-site house at LNF, with a kitchen, a living room, a garden, linens, towels, and cookware provided.
Where can I find art materials?
Please be prepared to bring highly specialized tools and materials, such as small etching or woodworking tools, certain archival photo paper and chemicals, etc. We are happy to go over your specific material list before arrival.
For basics, we provide residents with a resource guide that includes a list of art supply vendors. If you need help procuring something that is not listed in the resource guide, you can contact us via email or phone during office hours for help.
Do I need to produce an outcome?
No. The residency is research-driven. However, residents are encouraged to share their process through open studios, workshops, or talks.
Will I engage with the local art scene?
Yes. Residents are encouraged to attend exhibitions, studio visits, and cultural events. LNF facilitates introductions and visits to help you connect with the local community.
