LACMA Associate Curator

Salary range: $70,000 – $80,000
Reporting to the Curator and Department Head, the Associate Curator will be deeply committed to LACMA’s mission of inclusive access, collaboration, and dialogue, and will be encouraged to work with colleagues across LACMA’s departments. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in expanding the narratives around contemporary art. The ideal candidate will have broad intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in connecting time periods, cultures, etc. in an encyclopedic museum. The position will support curatorial work including acquisitions, exhibitions, publications, collections management, and donor cultivation. The Associate Curator will work primarily on campus, and as needed at various sites for donor cultivation as well as gallery and museum exhibitions.
Responsibilities

Conducts collection-focused research related to proposed acquisitions, including biographical and bibliographic research; creates and maintains files for proposed acquisitions; and communicates with vendors, collectors, and artists as necessary.

Participates in quarterly acquisitions meetings by preparing acquisition justifications and presenting acquisitions.

Provide collaborative support and leadership for permanent collection presentations, including but not limited to research, topic determination, object selection, developing layout, didactics, and overseeing installation.

Develops and fosters exhibitions for LACMA’s robust exhibition program, including support for large scale exhibition projects under the guidance of the Department Head.

Proposes, develops concepts and serves as author or co-author of museum publications, and contributes entries and back matter for catalogs.

Prepares content for Collections Online.

Assists department Curatorial Administrator to maintain collection files current, paper and electronic.- Works with Conservation and Collections Management to ensure the preservation of the collection.

Serves as mentor to junior and peer staff, interns, as well as Curatorial Fellows.

Works collaboratively to cultivate new donors, steward existing donors and support fund-raising from individuals, and foundations for acquisitions or exhibitions.

Participates in AHAN (Art Here and Now): Studio Forum and other departmental donor/supporter events

Performs other duties or special projects as assigned

The expected salary for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $70,000 – $80,000, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA’s comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.

Qualifications

MA in art, art history, curatorial studies, or related field

Minimum four to six years curatorial experience in a museum or arts institution/non-profit

Ability to work collaboratively across departments

Inquisitive and expansive thinking across disciplinary boundaries

Strong written and oral communication skills and flexibility to speak to multiple audiences (general to academic)
