Part-Time Lecturer – Studio Art, Art History or Curatorial Studies
Description
The Graduate Program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University is seeking a part-time Lecturer with a background in art history or curatorial studies to teach a new course, “Artists and Curatorial Practice,” in Fall 2019. The course should:
- cover curatorial practices, including approaches to thematic, site-specific, institutional and/or independent curating , and the role of the “artist as curator”
- include readings, lectures, and discussions on contemporary curating, art, global exhibitions, and debates in the field
- include critical or creative writing related to curating exhibitions as artists
- devote a significant amount of time to visual presentations and lectures on exhibitions, performances, and unique events
- teach professional skills and practices, such as installation preparedness, work methodologies, etiquette, correspondence, and how students can prepare themselves as artists to work with curators
- guide first-year MFA candidates in curating and selecting works for an exhibition that they will mount with the instructor’s guidance
Material related to the global south, SWANA, Asia, and new or marginalized discourses are welcome.
Qualifications
- PhD or MA in relevant field or MFA in visual/studio art. Advanced degree in art history, museum studies, and institutional or museum curating preferred. Curators who have earned MFA’s or worked as visual artists are encouraged to apply. Visual artists who are active independent curators will also be considered.
- Curatorial experience in the field of contemporary art, at a museum, university art gallery, cultural institution or via independent practice.
- Teaching experience of one to three years or more preferred.
