The Department of History of Art is one of the largest and most dynamic communities of art historians in the UK, with eighteen research-active colleagues who cover all periods from late antiquity to the present. The Department has some 350 students across a portfolio of exciting Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes with a wide historical, geographical, and thematic breadth, supported by a friendly atmosphere, small-group teaching methods, regular study trips, and spectacular historic locations. The Department has initiated a number of innovative partnerships with museums, galleries, and other organisations (including the National Gallery, Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, York Museums Trust, York Minster, and the Yorkshire Country House Partnership). These are coordinated through the Department’s ambitious umbrella organisation, York Art History Collaborations (YAHCs).

You will develop and undertake research projects within your specialist research field, which may relate to any aspect of the visual arts in the period since 1800.
