We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic colleague to join our photograph conservation team, someone who enjoys guiding students towards entering the conservation profession, and who likes to take on responsibility for the quality of education in close collaboration with the rest of the team.
Together with the other lecturer within the photograph conservation specialisation, you will be involved in educating this specialisation’s students in the Master and Advanced Professional Program (APP), guiding them in the development of academic and practical knowledge and skills with inspiring lectures and workshops, based on to the latest insights. You will also teach an introduction to photograph conservation in the BA minor programme Conservation and Restoration. You will furthermore supervise student conservation treatments, internships, and mentor and advise students during their 4 years of study. Depending on your background and time available, you may also contribute to programme-wide courses by providing the perspective of a photograph conservator (e.g. to courses in science, historical source research or ethics and theory).
As the successful candidate, you will join a dynamic context where you can learn about innovative teaching methods. In your teaching, you have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and lecturers in our team that covers ten different specialisations.
This is what you will be doing
- under the supervision of the (lead) instructor, you educate Master and APP students in the area of photograph conservation, and possibly in more general subjects;
- you coordinate practical matters around your own teaching (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
- you supervise and mentor student research (including Master and APP theses), internships and hands-on conservation projects;
- you mark (final) assignments, theses and papers, providing input on test design;
- you play a role in up-keeping and maintaining the photograph conservation laboratory;
- In consultation with the other lecturer, you build client relations with regard to internships and acquisition of objects for student hands-on sessions and research;
- you attend team meetings and participate in department and university events.
This is what we ask of you
- a Master degree in conservation of cultural heritage objects, and you have specialised in photograph conservation;
- if you graduated from UvA’s conservation programme, an APP certificate;
- advanced practical experience and skills in photograph conservation;
- you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to adjust instructions to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
- a team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the Capacity group Conservation and Restoration (C&R);
- you are digitally literate; can work with word, acrobat reader, powerpoint, excel;
- proven administrative experience and skills;
- you are able to teach in English with oral and written fluency;
- you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
- the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), or willingness to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract. You are required to obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
- a PhD in a relevant area is a plus, but is not a requirement for this position.
