The library collects books and periodicals that relate to the study of paintings in the western European tradition from the thirteenth to the early twentieth century and to the history of the National Gallery and its Collection. The library forms part of the National Gallery Research Centre which has primary responsibility for managing, conserving and providing both physical and digital access to the Gallery’s library and archive collections. As we approach the National Gallery’s bicentenary in 2024, plans are underway for a significant redevelopment of the Research Centre which will ensure that it continues to support the Gallery’s work as a global thought-leader and acts as a hub for a growing research community.
