The Second Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation “Micro-Curatorial” Project
The Second Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation (abbr. the foundation) “Micro-Curatorial” Project will be launched at Spare Space in Shanghai. This “Micro-curatorial” Project, as part of the site-specific project at Spare Space, calls for applications of exhibition proposals from artists, curators, art critics, practitioners and researchers in all arts and cultural fields across the world. The finalists will be given various amounts of honorariums; and the final recipient will be given 8000USD (equivalent of 50,000RMB) curatorial fee, whose proposal will be executed with the support of Blue Ocean Capital at Spare Space in Shanghai.
This call for applications seeks independent, open and diverse exhibition proposals, and is open to applicants at all age, professional, practicing in all artistic mediums, regions and concepts. The application should establish a connection with Spare Space and its immediate community, one that resonates with local historical and cultural context.
As a non-profit art organization, the Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation is founded in 2015. It is devoted to providing a diverse cultural platform for artists, curators, art critics and aficionados around the world, whereby to stimulate dialogues and thoughts that inspire the practices in contemporary art. Spare Space, was formerly a freestanding three-level French townhouse built in 1923, located in the former French Concession, in Shanghai. In December 2017, the renowned Italian architect, Nunziatina Carbone was invited to renovate the space in order to meet its need for exhibition making, while preserving its historical façade.
For this “Micro-Curatorial” Project, we are pleased to invite the art critic and curator, director of OCAT Xi’an, Karen Smith; independent art critic and curator, Bao Dong; independent curator Ying Kwok; artist Liu Wei and Frank F. Yang, collector and founder of this foundation to be the members of the jury committee. Karen Smith will be the chair of this jury.
Proceedings upon receiving the applications:
- Organize a committee of renowned art world practitioners as the jurors of first round selection
- Announces the list of selected proposals on July 20, and announce the finalist on August 17th, 2018
- Selected proposals are likely to be published for non-commercial usage
- Provide full support in executing the finalist’s proposed project
- Provide online/offline media support of the selected exhibition project
- The works of art in the exhibition will be considered for the foundation acquisition

- Curatorial statement: With consideration of the site-specificity of Spare Space, state the notions for your proposed exhibition
- Installation plan: State the plans to execute the exhibition and floor planning (3D model of Spare Space is available for below link: https://pan.baidu.com/s/1FZNUGhhDxBeGr12SxJS82Q)
- Budget proposal: List the costs for executing the exhibition (including transportation of artworks, insurance, artwork production, installation, travel and etc.)
- Curator’s Resume/statement: State one’s past lines of thoughts and practices
- Resume/statement of participating artists: general statement of the artist’s practice and direction
- Images, captions, and artwork statement;
The application should not exceed 10 pages (on A4 paper)

Vision & Mission
Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation is established and registered in Hong Kong by Mr. Frank F. Yang in 2015. As a non-profit art organization, the Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation is devoted to providing a diverse cultural platform for artists, curators, art critics and aficionados around the world, whereby to stimulate dialogues and thoughts that inspire the practices in contemporary art. The foundation is actively engaged in promoting research, exchange and collection of contemporary art, and it supports and funds exhibitions, activities and publications for other non-profit art organizations. Spare Space
Spare Space is the third non-profit art space established under the Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation, located in Shanghai’s historic (former) French Concession. Once a residential townhouse, its recent renovation tailors to meet its multi-functional demand for art exhibition, financial office and residency. Unlike the conventional “white cube” art space, Spare Space preserves the aesthetic taste of its own history and its past owners, while its current minimalist interior design allows for maximum flexibility and art experimentation. The main floor and the garden area of this three-level building are primarily used for supporting art projects, while the second and third floors are office areas.
In 2017, to inaugurate the space, we invited young curators Wang Dan and Jiang Jun to curate Shen Linghao’s solo exhibition, “All Said and Done Before the Fat Lady Sings: Developed from Spare Particles”. For this exhibition, the artist’s case study became a point of inception, followed by a number of “events” including academic discussions, workshops, and on site performance, to reshape this “spare” space, where its historical context and the development of urban contemporary space can converge.
The Jury
Karen Smith
Karen Smith is a British art critic and curator, an avid promoter of Chinese Contemporary art. Since her relocation to China in 1992, Karen has been devoted in the research of this field. Her presentation on the status of development of contemporary Chinese art in its various phases, her publications on the works of the artists, as well as the large volumes of texts published on international periodicals have become a critical channel for the world to learn about Chinese contemporary art. Her works include, Nine Lives: The Birth of Avant-Garde Art in New China; the book series, As Seen: Notable Works by Chinese Artists. In 2013, Karen has accepted the invitation of the German publisher Taschen, to be the contributor for Art Now Vol.4. on China.
Karen has organized and curated numerous group and solo exhibitions on Chinese contemporary art in China and around the world, that include, A Potent Force: Duan Jianyu and Hu Xiaoyuan (Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, 2013), Eyes and Ears (Today Art Museum, Beijing, 2009), Subtlety (Platform China, Beijing, 2008), The Real Thing (Tate Liverpool, U.K., 2007), The Chinese: Photography and Video Art from China (Kunst museum, Wolfsburg, 2004), as well as solo exhibitions of contemporary Chinese artists such as Ai Weiwei, Liu Xiaodong, Xu Ruotao, Jia Aili. In 2005, Karen became an academic advisor for the Shenzhen OCT Art Terminal, and was appointed the executive director of the Xi’an OCT Art Terminal in 2012.
Ying Kwok
Ying Kwok is the sole curator at the Chinese Arts Centre (renamed as Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in 2013) in Manchester in the UK between 2006 and 2012. Since 2013, Kwok became independence curator working internationally. She curated Collector Club in Oi!, Hong Kong, co-curated Harmonious Society, as part of Asia Triennial Manchester 2014, From longing to belonging at Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art in Poland, No cause for alarm at La MaMa Galleria in New York. Kwok is the lead curator of LOOK International Photography Festival and curator for Hong Kong presentation in the 57th Venice Biennale 2017.
In 2014, Kwok was awarded the Asia Cultural Council Fellowship to carry out a five-month-long research on participatory and engagement projects in the US. To encourage critical thinking and initiating effective discussions in Hong Kong, Kwok founded Art Appraisal Club with a group of local art professional. The group provides regular exhibition reviews and their articles are published in magazines and various cultural networks. The group launched the bilingual bi-annual journal, Art Review Hong Kong in 2016.
Bao Dong
Bao Dong is an art critic and independent curator based in Beijing. In contributing essays to the artistic dialogue and other forms of involvement, Bao has established himself as a leading curator and critic of work by the new generation. His articles have been widely published in art journals and artist monographs both at home and abroad. He has curated many exhibitions for a wide range of art institutions including Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, the Art Center of Chulalongkorn University, Guangdong Times Museum, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, etc. He was awarded Asian Cultural Council (ACC) fellowship grant in 2014, and became a nominee of Independent Curators International’s (ICI) 2014 Independent Vision Curatorial Award. Recently he was awarded Yishu Awards for Curating Contemporary Chinese Art 2016.
Liu Wei
Liu Wei was born and presently resides in Beijing, China. He was trained as a painter at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou in 1996. He is heavily influenced by the instability and fluctuation peculiar to twenty-first century China, in particular with respect to its physical and intellectual landscape. Liu Wei has participated in the 3rd Aichi Triennial (Aichi, Japan, 2016); the 9th and 13th Biennale de Lyon (2007, 2015); the 11th Sharjah Biennial (2013); the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Guangzhou Triennial (2002, 2005, 2008, 2012); the 6th Busan Biennale (2008); the 51st Venice Biennale (2005) etc; he was the Martell Artist of the Year in 2012; he was nominated for the Award of Art China 2015 and 2016, and was nominated for the Credit Suisse Today Art Award 2011.
Frank F. Yang
Frank F. Yang is an art collector and supporter. He is also an investor and entrepreneur in Finance, with more than 16 years of professional experience. Mr. Yang is currently the founding partner and chairman of Blue Ocean Capital Group and Youjoy Capital. In 2015, Mr. Yang founded an non-profit organization Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation, that is devoted to education, promotion and research in contemporary art, as well as supports various exhibitions and public events in contemporary art . As a patron of various non-profit organizations, he provides support to a series of museum programmes and artist projects. Mr. Yang is a member of the M+ Council for New Art and used to be the council of Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA). Graduated from HKUST Business School with a M.B.A degree, Mr. Yang is currently pursuing a doctor degree in Art History in Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
