Introduction

Zad: Miles for Connection is a dynamic support framework aimed at promoting mobility and communication for Arab artists in Europe. It focuses on enhancing artists’ artistic and professional development through collaborations and engaging with diverse audiences. By addressing challenges and obstacles, Zad ensures these artists contribute significantly to public life in their new European cities and countries.

Supporting Artists’ Mobility

The initiative supports artists’ mobility by covering various costs. These include travel and accommodation expenses, transportation and shipment of artworks, and translation services for artworks. It emphasizes adopting environmentally friendly and economically viable transportation options.

Eligibility and Application Process

Eligible applicants include Arab artists who have moved to Europe since 2015 from specific countries like Syria, Palestine, and others. Both individuals and groups may apply. Any artist who plays a major role in the artistic work and who needs support to travel can apply: director, writer, music composer, scenographer, producer, or curator, regardless of the nationality of the team who can benefit from ZAD’s framework. Applications are reviewed by a diverse, independent committee based on criteria such as artistic destination relevance, audience engagement, and networking potential. There are two application phases annually, with deadlines in May and September.

Program Duration and Coverage

Zad will run from 2024 to 2026 as part of Ettijahat’s strategic plan. The program extends across Europe, covering cities and regions within the artists’ countries of residence and beyond.
