The Smithsonian Institution is seeking a Museum Curator (Art) for the National Museum of African Art (NMAFA). This senior role focuses on shaping and executing the museum’s Collections Development Strategy, enhancing the quality and scope of its holdings, and contributing to exhibitions, research, and public programming related to African art and culture.
The Museum Curator will lead strategic collection development while collaborating with artists, collectors, and institutions. The role combines curatorial leadership, acquisitions management, and institutional strategy, alongside oversight of exhibitions and scholarly initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of the Collections Development Strategy
- Work with the Acquisitions Committee to strengthen and expand the collection
- Maintain relationships with artists, galleries, collectors, and curators
- Coordinate curatorial projects including exhibitions, publications, and public programs
- Re-evaluate and innovate museological practices across the institution
- Supervise curatorial staff, contractors, interns, and fellows
Candidate Profile
- Degree in museum studies or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum one year of specialized experience at GS-12 level or equivalent
- Proven experience developing exhibitions from concept to opening
- Experience with collections strategy and acquisitions
- Strong network within African art contexts (artists, galleries, collectors)
- Experience managing or collaborating on acquisitions and related funds
- Strong leadership and team management skills
