Position Overview
The Department of Museum, Arts & Culture seeks a creative, organized, and community-oriented Museum Curator. This role involves leading the development of distinctive exhibitions that reflect regional history and art. The Museum Curator will manage multiple projects, supervise staff, and collaborate closely with the Museum Manager to shape the curatorial vision of the Ontario Museum of History & Art.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute curatorial vision, focusing on exhibit research, development, and production.
- Supervise and direct staff, including selection, evaluation, and development.
- Coordinate and train volunteers and docents.
- Correspond with agencies and the public regarding museum matters.
- Attend meetings with various stakeholders and represent the museum at events.
- Develop promotional content and assist with grant writing.
- Ensure the preservation of the museum building and collections.
- Plan and develop capital improvements in collaboration with other departments.
Exhibitions and Collections
- Coordinate planning, design, and installation of exhibitions.
- Collaborate with museum staff, community representatives, and scholars.
- Manage loans of objects, assess conditions, and arrange for appropriate insurance.
- Conduct research for upcoming exhibitions and maintain collections.
Educational Programs
- Develop public educational programs, including school tours and workshops.
- Partner with regional school districts to align with core curriculum standards.
- Promote museum exhibits, programs, and events through public outreach.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in U.S. or California History, Museum Studies, Art History, Anthropology, or related fields. A Master’s Degree may substitute for two years of experience.
- Experience: Three years of museum experience, including collections management and exhibition development.
- Licenses: Valid Class C CA driver’s license.
- Special Requirements: Ability to climb ladders, carry heavy loads, and safely use hand and power tools.
- Desirable Skills: Master’s Degree, Spanish language proficiency, knowledge of regional history, and previous experience in curating exhibitions.
Salary
$5,706.14 – $7,006.14 Monthly
