Job Description
The MIT Museum is seeking a Studio Coordinator to oversee the studio facility, which includes the gallery, work, and teaching spaces. The role involves providing technical advice, assistance, and mentorship to students in areas such as art and engineering collaboration, project design, 3D modeling software, rapid prototyping, fabrication, and exhibition design.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing the technical design and construction of innovative prototypes for teaching, demonstrations, sensory experiences, and exhibitions, following the objectives defined by the studio director.
- Providing technical support and instruction to students.
- Overseeing materials and equipment inventory, and maintaining work areas.
- Supporting teaching activities, including operating media for presentations, constructing properties, assisting with workshops, and managing equipment.
- Facilitating studio communications and performing other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Experience: At least three years in a museum or similar setting with demonstrated technical skills in studio, shop, and/or museum environments, including physical construction, gallery installation, and media setup.
- Skills: Experience in art, design, and/or engineering projects; familiarity with fabrication and electronics tools; proficiency in electronic prototyping (e.g., circuits, microprocessors, programmable LEDs, motor control); comfort with hand and bench tools, with the capability to train others; and effective communication skills to support students’ technical learning.
This position aligns with the school calendar (September 1 to August 31) and may be extended. A portfolio submission is required with the application, either as a PDF or via a web link.
