Head of Research & Learning
Role Purpose
IMMA wishes to recruit a Head of Research & Learning (Assistant Principal Grade) on a full time, permanent basis. Reporting to the Director of IMMA, the Head of Research & Learning is responsible for the management and strategic direction of the Engagement & Learning Department. Drawing from the Collections and Exhibitions at IMMA, the Head of Research & Learning will work closely with the Collections and Programming Departments to ensure that IMMA’s access and engagement resources reach the widest audience. The work of the Engagement & Learning team is fundamental to IMMA’s mission to foster innovation and creativity through programmes centred around the research, creation, presentation, and collection of the art of our time.
Main Duties and Responsibilities include:
Strategy and Planning
- Actively contribute at a strategic level on the Senior Management Team.
- Create a clear Research and Learning 3 year strategic plan, with the Head of Programming, Head of Collections and Director that aligns with the overarch- ing strategy for the museum and develop and deliver on that plan.
- Lead on the Research and Learning activities and implement strategies across the organisation to ensure that the Visitor Engagement growth is accelerated and that success is achieved in increasing IMMA’s impact and engagement with an ever broadening audience.
- Lead the project to develop IMMA’s Global Learning and Research Centre that involves the making available of a wealth of IMMA’s archive to the public.
- Develop IMMA’s thematic research-based resources in pursuit of its strategic aim to be a centre of research and innovation.
- To support artists by promoting the artists’ projects and engaging the artists in the delivery of access programming
Leadership and Management
- Provide leadership in the Engagement and Learning department, working closely with the Director, the Senior Management Team, the Visitor Engage- ment Manager and key partners both inside and outside of IMMA.
- Manage the Engagement and Learning department, with its wide array of audi- ences
- Maximise the contribution of the team as a whole so that they can provide a professional, relevant and engaged programme to IMMA audiences.
- Clearly define objectives / goals and delegate effectively, encouraging owner- ship and responsibility for tasks.
- Bring a focus and drive to building and sustaining high levels of performance, developing the team’s capacity through feedback, coaching and creating skills development.
Research & Learning
- Develop and lead on the implementation of programmes strategy and objec- tives.
- Lead and advise on public programmes infrastructure required in relation to capital development projects, exhibitions and programmes.
- Initiate, design and deliver a comprehensive access and engagement pro- gramme for a wide range of the public both on-site and on-line to compliment the museum’s Exhibition and Collection programmes.
- Ensure best practice across Engagement & learning programmes in relation to content, delivery and evaluation.
- Work in collaboration with the Head of Audiences and Development to devise appropriate communications strategies both digital and print for IMMA’s pro- grammes, maximising audience engagement.
- Develop and advise on new approaches, to engage audiences and interpret the collections and exhibitions.
- Contribute to IMMA’s commitment to deliver a positive experience for all our audiences as part of the Visitor Engagement steering committee.
- Responsible for the development of IMMA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion programmes.
- Prepare and be accountable for the departments’ annual budgetary estimates and business plans for the department.
- Procure and manage contracts as required by IMMA education projects.
Associated duties
- Play a leading role in the building of IMMA’s Global Learning and Research Centre and of progressing IMMA’s research initiatives and activities.
- Build on and develop effective partnerships required to deliver programmes and policies in the department.
- Direct the participation in National Committees namely: Teacher Artist Partner- ship / Arts in Education Portal / CNCI / National Children’s Hospital / Age & Opportunity.
- Responsibility for the management of IMMA’s archive.
- Lead on IMMA’s Child Protection Policy.
- To enable access for disability groups.
The successful candidate will be / have:
- A minimum of a Masters degree in an education related field, arts and culture field, museum studies or equivalent qualified in relevant subject.
- 10 years recent senior management experience and leadership roles managing multi-functional services of employees with different skills to achieve a variety of objectives.
- A track record of conceiving and delivering high level engagement and learning programmes that are respected locally and internationally.
- A proven track record of a participative and co-operative approach to building excellent working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- Experience of strategically analysing and reporting on departmental perfor- mance.
- An ability to represent the Museum.
- Excellent relationship management, problem solving, leadership and influencing
- skills together with resilience, drive and integrity.
- Experience of working in or closely with the Public Sector.
An ability to maintain composure while working under pressure whilst achieving tight deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail

Grade & Salary: Salary will be in accordance with points 1 to 8 of the Assistant Principal Salary Scale (PPC), currently €73,236 gross to €91,270
Annual Leave: 30 days Duration: Permanent
Location: Onsite and home / remote blended working available. This may be subject to change due to IMMA operational requirements and reviews.
Working Hours: Full Time, 5 days per week – 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Flexibility is required as part of this post and a willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
