Introduction
Looking to grow as a critic and explore art writing? The 2024 Frieze New Writers Programme offers a unique chance in Vienna, Austria. This free, three-day intensive course runs from 4 to 6 April. It aims to develop the skills of aspiring writers with the help of the Frieze editorial team and art-world professionals.
What the Programme Offers
Participants will engage in workshops covering various essential skills. These include how to pitch, interview techniques, and crafting compelling profiles and reviews. Visits to galleries and studios provide a deeper understanding of the art scene. The programme encourages writers over 18 from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The course will be in English, covering all expenses, including travel, accommodation, and meals.
Opportunity for Publication
Each participant will have their work refined by Frieze editors. There’s a chance to feature on frieze.com.

Application Details
- Eligibility: Aspiring arts writers over 18 from the specified countries, with up to three published art pieces in English.
- Course Dates: 4 April – 6 April in Vienna.
- Requirements: Submit an unpublished English review (max 350 words) and a 150-word statement on your motivation and goals.
- Deadline: 16 February 2024, 12 midnight (CET).
Selection Process
Frieze editors and a Phileas representative will choose the participants. Selected candidates will be informed by 5 March 2024. Please note that feedback will not be provided to those not selected.
