Online Course on Contemporary Curating

Contradictions of Capital, Curating, and Care
Lecturer: Sascia Bailer

Course dates: 6 Feb + 13 Feb 2021, each 2–6pm (CET)
Enrol until 30 January 2021

Even though carework has historically been one of the most exploitative and invisible forms of labor mainly performed by women, it seems to have taken a pandemic to bring these unequal conditions to the foreground of public debate. This course will take a critical look at the history of social reproduction and how the roles of women as primary caregivers have changed over time up to today; this includes a look at a range of feminist activist initiatives that challenge the status quo of un(der)paid care work. The course will furthermore revisit the etymological root of curating (Latin, curare = care) and how curatorial labor, in many ways like care-work, is a highly feminized, invisible, and precarious practice. Lastly, the course looks at the discourse around curating-as-care as a curatorial activist practice to challenge the uneven conditions around gender, care, and community.
This course is conceived as a dialog-based, participatory format that contains group work and hands-on exercises in relation to the topics and ethics of care, and the ways in which these can be introduced into the participants own curatorial practice.

Sascia Bailer works at the intersection of curating, public space, and social justice. She is the Artistic Director 2019/20 of M.1 by the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung and is a PhD candidate in the practice-based curatorial program at the Zurich University of the Arts and the University of Reading. She has worked internationally within the arts, including MoMA PS1, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics. She holds an MA from Parsons School of Design and a BA from Zeppelin University.
