Online course on Exhibition Design

This course examines the planning and designing of three-dimensional environments that encourage visitor’s understanding, participation, and emotional engagement. Participants will learn different tools to understand and manipulate space using from simple existing elements to design graphics or multimedia in order to make the exhibition content more clear and accessible.
Following the course participants will learn practical tools to observe a situation, create a design brief and develop a presentation of an exhibition design proposal.

Program
Week 1: Introduction and observation
- exhibitions types, what makes a space design successful?
- space narrative, visitor needs and characteristics
- interaction design: observation strategies, needfinding,
- observation of a space/situation
Week 2: Design Tools
- space plans and architecture terms
- space mapping, understanding light, noise, circulation
- visualization and 3D basic tools
- design elements: rhythm, color, display and lighting
- graphics: wall text and labels
- ideas generation for a personal project
Week 3: Design Brief
- design brief
- managing the creative process: what are responsibilities of the team? what are the phases of the schedule?
- development of the personal project
Week 4: Design Process and Design Proposal
- testing: peer review, visitor feedback – before, during, remedial
- building tools and technology
- printing tips
- presentation techniques
- presentation of a complete design proposal
