Contour Biennale 11 enters a new phase of transformation, focusing on sustainability, inclusivity, and critical engagement with audiovisual arts. With a renewed emphasis on site-specificity and a small-scale approach, this edition challenges conventional biennale formats and seeks to contribute to positive change through thoughtful, enduring artistic practices.

Role Overview
The selected curator will shape the concept, content, and overall form of Contour Biennale 11, guiding the biennale into new territories of engagement. Key responsibilities include:
- Concept Development:
- Create a comprehensive curatorial concept in collaboration with the biennale’s general and artistic directors.
- Develop an artist list and select locations, with the initial proposal due by August 15 as a basis for fundraising.
- Production & Programming:
- Oversee the production of new works and plan the exhibition installation.
- Write critical texts and design a public program that includes talks, events, and an international visitor’s programme.
- Leadership & Management:
- Leverage an expansive network and articulate clear curatorial standpoints.
- Dedicate time to represent and present the biennale throughout its full arc.
- Navigate a predefined financial framework and actively seek additional funding.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a curator who:
- Possesses a strong, critical understanding of the international visual and audiovisual arts landscape.
- Demonstrates excellent leadership, project management, and team-guiding skills.
- Has a proven track record in curatorial practice, with the ability to design engaging public programs.
- Is resourceful in managing budgets and securing additional funds.
- Understands the unique challenges and opportunities of hosting a biennale in a medium-sized city like Mechelen.

- Submission Deadline: Monday, 31 March 2025, 10:00 AM CET
- Notification: Friday, 11 April 2025
- Online Interviews: Monday, 14 April 2025 (for shortlisted candidates)
Compensation and Benefits
- Curator Fee: €15,000 (subject to increase if additional funds are available)
- Additional Coverage: Travel and accommodation expenses are covered separately by Contour.
