OPEN CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS FOR THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES NATIONAL PARTICIPATION AT LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA
APPLICATION DEADLINE: OCTOBER 31, 2021 Midnight UAE time (GMT+4)
The National Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates [NPUAE] at La Biennale di Venezia is inviting submissions through an OPEN CALL for Concept Proposals for the UAE national participation at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia, due to open in May 2023.
ELIGIBILITY
Architects, designers, artists, historians and researchers who have worked or studied within the UAE or the MENASA region are invited to submit a Concept Proposal that avails of the Venice Architecture Biennale’s reputation as a forum for the dissemination and exchange of ideas. Proposals should advance the NPUAE mission, which is to un-earth and reflect on the untold stories of the UAE, to contextualize those stories to regional and international discourse, and to identify contemporary developments in architectural discourse.
UAE citizens, residents of the UAE, and international applicants are all eligible to apply. Individuals living and working in the UAE or teams with one member who is UAE based are preferred. If the proposal is a team effort then a team leader needs to be identified.
SUBMISSION CRITERIA
Concept Proposals must be submitted in a single PDF containing the following, no more than 10 pages and max.file size 5Mb:
- A clear narrative that describes the subject or theme and clearly explains the conceptual approach to the pavilion [no more than 2500 words]
- Any visual support material (e.g. photos, sketches, etc.)
- List of team members (if applicable), if more than one please identify a lead contact
- Short Bio of team members (no more than 500 words per person)
- Up to three samples of past work (no more than 3 images per project)
- All applications must be in English
- Send Proposals to architecture@nationalpavilionuae.org with a link to download the proposal using a file-sharing service such as WeTransfer or Dropbox.
- Insert ‘NPUAEArch2023’ and the filename of the PDF into the Subject line of the e-mail.

SELECTION PROCESS
Selection will be a three-part process.
For each phases an appointed selection committee of industry leaders and subject matter experts will review all proposals. All applicants will be notified of final decisions.
The selection is based on content and quality of the proposal, the ability to execute final exhibition in Venice, and most importantly, what is the UAE story being told and what is that story’s relevance on a global level.
One proposal will be selected and the individual/team will be invited to work with the NPUAE team to deliver the exhibition at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale in May 2023.
