Introduction
The Inuit Art Quaterly publishes engaging and thoughtful stories for both its print magazine and website. These stories focus on the experiences and work of Inuit artists across all mediums. Our content includes artist interviews, historical analyses, and personal essays.
Who We Prioritize
The IAQ prioritizes emerging and established Inuit writers. We also welcome submissions from individuals who identify as Indigenous, Black, people of colour, disabled, women, queer, trans, or non-binary persons. International perspectives, especially from the circumpolar North, are also encouraged.
Support for Emerging Writers
The IAQ is committed to supporting emerging writers. Even if you have never been published before, we want to hear your unique perspective on Inuit artists and their practices.
Rates
The IAQ offers competitive rates for accepted submissions:
- $1,750 for feature articles and interviews
- $500 for artist profiles and other front-of-book pieces
- $250 for reviews (Note: reviews are not currently being published)
Writers are paid $1 per word for both print and online content. Payments are made by e-transfer the Friday after invoices are received. Alternative arrangements can be requested.
How to Pitch to IAQ
Open Call The IAQ accepts pitches on topics about Inuit artists and their work year-round. Send your pitches to iaq [at] inuitartfoundation [dot] org with “Open Call” in the subject line.
Specific Topics for Online Pitches
- Influence of family practices on contemporary art makers
- Community perspectives on local artists and their practices
- Profiles of emerging artists
- New reflections on the history of Inuit art
- Impact of industry practices like resale legislation and copyright infringements on artists’ livelihoods
Assignment Requests The IAQ also looks for writers for specific themes in upcoming issues and online content. Interested writers can send a bio and writing sample to iaq [at] inuitartfoundation [dot] org.
Submission Tools & Tips
Pitches should be around 250 words and highlight the subject, artists, or artworks included. Discuss the ideas or concepts your feature will cover, and provide relevant information about yourself and why you are suited to write the story.
